Classwork // Compare and Contrast the ‘Discovery’ to the dramas that we have analysed.

In the Tv series Luther, the opening scene is straight to the point and instantly lets the audience know what type of genre the tv series is and what might happen throughout the show as there is a lot of things going on. However in Discovery, the opening scene is not as dramatic and interesting as Luther because not much happens at the beginning and it takes time to let the audience understand what the story line is and what the genre is. The lighting in Discovery is low key lighting in the opening scene as it is quite dark and there is light reflecting from the windows which makes the whole movie seem dramatic and horror themed. In comparison to Luther the lighting is also low key lighting however, it gives us the idea that the genre is action or drama as there is a lot of movements and Luther chasing the antagonist whereas in Discovery, everyone in the first scene is sitting still with not much movements or action going on which is less effective and interesting. There is an eye line and the 180 degree rule shot at the start of Discovery which is effective as it lets us know who is having a conversation and shows their facial expressions as they are talking, the camera is also stable throughout the first scene. In Luther, it is fast paced with a lot of different camera angles and shots which makes it realistic and adds tension to the scene.
