Class work // Analysis of a Netflix series

Three shot types and what they could be used to express:

1.Screen Shot 2018-05-03 at 11.25.05.png

This is a close up shot, it is used to show the audience the characters facial expressions and their emotions without any communication in the scene by zooming into their faces. In this scene, you can see that Hannah is upset as there are tears and because of the way she is looking at the other character in that scene.

2.Screen Shot 2018-05-03 at 11.29.52.png

This is an over-shoulder shot, it expresses what the character is seeing from their point of view so that the audience can see from their perspective. In this scene, we can see what the man on the right is seeing from an over-shoulder shot which is Hannah’s mother.

3.Screen Shot 2018-05-03 at 11.35.51.png

This is a long shot, it is used to show everything that is happening in the scene and everything that we can see. In this scene, we can see that Clay is in a graveyard as the scene was shot in a long shot which helps us know where the scene is set in.

  • Explain how a particular mood or atmosphere can be constructed.

Screen Shot 2018-05-03 at 12.04.04.png

In this scene, you can tell by Hannah’s facial expression that something is about to happen or something has already happened as she looks shocked and worried. This specific mood can be constructed as there is high-key lighting used to make sure that we can see her facial expressions properly. There is also dramatic music during this scene which gives the audience the idea that something bad will happen, this adds tension to the scene and makes the audience interested in knowing what is about to happen.

  • Explain how off-screen action can be signified.

This is when the audience doesn’t see the character that is speaking in a scene. For example when Hannah is reading out her tapes, her face is not shown in those scenes however Clay is shown, this is to show us his emotions and facial reactions towards her tapes and the things that she says.

  • Explain how realism or verisimilitude can be constructed.

Realism can be constructed by the realistic images that are used and the way the camera angles are used to show someone’s reactions.

  • Explain how three ways in which editing can be used to provoke an emotional response from the audience.

One way is by using attractions, this is when there are sudden movements in a scene that catches the audience’s attention emotionally. It makes them wonder what will happen next and depending on the genre of the movie, if there are shadows appearing in horror movie the audience will have a shocking response as they would feel scared.

The second way is by using a cut-by-cut or speeding up the scene and changing the tempo, this lets the audience know that there is something going on or something bad is about to happen by speeding up a scene or quickly moving on to another scene with close up shots of a persons facial expressions.

The third way is the music, this adds tension to the scene and makes it more dramatic and interesting for the audience to watch.

  • What are the three stages of a narrative structure?

The first stage is used for exposition, to introduce the characters and the main ones, their relationship statuses and what kind of world they live in.

The second stage is called the ‘rising action’ this is when the protagonist tries to solve a problem that was the first turning point. However, he/she finds him or herself in a bad situation.

The third stage is when the issues and problems have been resolved.
